Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) form the crux of our civilisation. We owe our improved quality of life to the continued efforts by individuals in STEM who toil hard to make the world safer, secure, and more sustainable. Yet, even with the brightest minds within this realm, only a small percentage of female graduates, take up and sustain fulltime careers in STEM and safety sciences as opposed to their male counterparts.
At Underwriters Laboratories, we are dedicated to creating a safer, more secure and sustainable future. Through the Word to the W.I.S.E. Podcasts we bring a wide range of experts who are women, to engage in a conversation on safety science, STEM fields and the representation of women in these fields. They not only provide insights on what it is like to navigate the field as a woman, but also reflect on how they push the boundaries, develop resilience, confidence, and build a niche for themselves.
Through a combination of podcasts, thought leadership articles and webinars among others, our aim is to bring unique personal and professional journeys of women in science and engineering, whose work has impacted the realms of safety, security and sustainability as a point of inspiration whilst providing young women a platform to seek advice, guidance and support in their academic and professional journeys.
Word to the W.I.S.E. welcomes every woman in STEM to be part of a community of like-minded women who can empower, educate, and encourage each other.

For Harshini this is all in a day’s work, after all she believes no field of work belongs to any gender and that applies especially to alternative careers in the fields of science and engineering which address issues of safety and security.
Dr. Judy Jeevarajan has dedicated her career to the science of safety. Her ground-breaking leadership in energy storage technology led to her work at NASA, and now she leads the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute for Underwriters Laboratories. Kicking off our podcast, Dr. Jeevarajan chronicles her journey in the field of Battery Safety and takes us through her achievements and challenges.
