Underwriters Laboratories

Underwriters Laboratories is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the UL mission through the discovery and application of scientific knowledge. We conduct rigorous independent research and analyze safety data, convene experts worldwide to address risks, share knowledge through safety education and public outreach initiatives, and develop standards to guide the safe, sustainable commercialization of evolving technologies. We fund our work through grants, the licensing of standards documents and the business activities of UL Inc., our wholly owned subsidiary, which conducts testing, verification and certification, and provides training and advisory services, along with data-driven reporting and decision-making tools for customers around the world. History of Underwriters Laboratories in India

For over 15 years, the Underwriters Laboratories team in India has been carrying out mission-related work in the areas of safety, security and sustainability, and we continue to positively impact people and society through our efforts.   1. 2005

    • Employees volunteer to promote fire safety education in Bengaluru schools
  2. 2007

    • First Fire Safety Council meeting, the first of its kind outside of North America, held at New Delhi
  3. 2009

    • Initiative with IIT Gandhinagar aimed at promoting academic work in the area of fire and electrical safety
    • Organized a Safety Smart Ambassador training event in collaboration with Times NIE
  4. 2010

    • Safety display at Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bengaluru, highlighting electrical safety, reaches one million visitors per year
    • India Product Safety Summit at New Delhi brings together industry stakeholders, regulators and academia to discuss safety
  5. 2012

    • First Insurance Industry Forum convened, establishing linkages with general insurance industry
  6. 2013

    • Science Express, a mobile exhibition which travelled all over India, in collaboration with Vikram A Sarabhai Community Science Centre unveiled
    • Safety Science Quiz launched in collaboration with Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bengaluru
    • Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP), supported by Underwriters Laboratories, releases India report
    • First India Road Safety Forum held

    • First fire forensics programme launched
    • National Safety Science Quiz launched
    • Partnered with Ashoka Changemakers to identify social entrepreneurs to work on game-changing road safety solutions
  8. 2015

    • "Safer Roads, Safer India," a micro-grants initiative that encourages youth involvement in road safety, in partnership with Youth Service America (YSA) launched
    • Collaborated with World Resources Institute (WRI) to enhance the role of corporates in ensuring road safety
    • Safer Schools Safer India programme initiated with Goa state government

    • First India Energy Storage Summit held, bringing together industry experts, innovators and regulators
    • Glass façade testing facility launched at IIT Gandhinagar campus to help advance research on fire safety of buildings with glass exteriors
    • Launched the first Standards Roundtable
    • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) signed

    • National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences Advancing Road Safety in India report launched
    • Launched
    • Launched Safer Public Bus Transportation programme with WRI
    • Collaborated with NDTV for National Safety Science Quiz and Safety Parliament television programmes
    • Organized Fire Safety Council meeting
    • Organized the second Standards Roundtable
    • Signed MOU with the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE)

    • Launched National Safety Science Campaign as an independent programme to expand reach and participation
    • Roundtable discussion on Battery for Electric Vehicles (EVs): Performance and Safety Limits with WRI held
    • Joined hands with WRI and Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative on "India Vision Zero" programme for Global Road Safety to achieve Zero Road Fatalities
    • Organized the third Standards Roundtable

    • Released national research report Advancing Child Safety in India: Implementation is the Key in collaboration with NIMHANS, an institute of national importance
    • Hosted India Energy Storage Summit, bringing together industry experts, government, researchers, battery manufacturers and other relevant stakeholders
    • Published white paper, Enhancing Quality of Batteries for Electric Vehicles and Renewable Energy Storage in India - To establish a safe, secure and sustainable energy storage ecosystem
    • Published research report Making Public Bus Transit Safer in India in collaboration with WRI India
    • UL Standards MOU with Confederation of Indian Industry's Centre of Excellence for Quality (CII-IQ) held
    • Held capacity building workshop with Confederation of Indian Industry and UL Standards

    • Collaborated with United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for Be Safe Buy Real anti-counterfeiting campaign in India
    • Educated 1,000+ teachers on the Be Safe Buy Real campaign and importance of Standards through partnership with Times Newspapers in Education programme
    • "Advancing Child Safety in India – Implementation is the Key" published in International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion
    • "Safer Access to Schools" programme with WRI undertaken
    • Collaborated with WRI for a series of webinars focussing on safety of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles
    • Signed MOU with BIS
    • Projects to improve road safety and child safety in India featured at Virtual Pre-Conference Global Injury Prevention Showcase, a WHO and Public Health Association of Australia initiative
    • "Battery Fires: Study on Readiness Level of India’s Fire Services" initiated to understand and assess how India's fire services approach battery fires, especially those associated with electric vehicles and stationary grid applications

    • Signed MoU with Bureau of Indian Standards ( BIS)
    • India projects featured at Virtual Pre conference Global Injury Prevention Showcase , a WHO and Public Health Association of Australia initiative
    • Study initiated to understand and assess the readiness level of India's fire services to deal with battery fires, especially associated with electric vehicles and stationary grid applications titled, ‘Battery Fires: Study on Readiness Level of India’s Fire Services’
